Since it’s Thursday, it’s open lab day in class today. You should accomplish the following:
- Complete Photoshop Exercise #2 (details below)
- Complete a significant portion of your Photoshop Remix, which is due next Thursday
As usual, please let me know if you have any questions or problems!
Photoshop Exercise #2
- Download the image at: http://courses.kathiegossett.com/…/ps2/kenilworth_ruins.jpg
- “Photoshop it.” That is, make it look as good as you possibly can. (This will require you to do some color correction as well as image repair work.)
- When you have finished, resize your image to 500 px x 400 px.
- Save your image as a JPG (File>>Save for Web/Device). Include your last name in the file name (e.g., lastname_photoshop2.jpg.
- Upload the file to the appropriate folder in the Exercises folder on the course server. (Hint: Use the Dreamhost WebFTP link to the left.)

Since the email gods have decided to frown on me recently, the first thing I need everyone to do is resend me your del.icio.us URL. All the email from 8/27-8/30 has mysteriously disappeared from my inbox and OCCS has no explanation for it. Don’t worry–I got everyone’s Photoshop Exercise #1 and marked them down in my gradebook before this unfortunate event happened. I hadn’t gotten around to adding all the del.icio.us urls to the website before it happened though.
Other than that, we’ll be discussing your experiences with Photoshop and I’ll have a few tips and tricks to show you.

In this class we will be learning to code documents by hand—we will not be using Dreamweaver or some other code generator. However, in the most recent versions of TextEdit Apple has become a bit too helpful with HTML. Rather than showing you the code you have written, after you have saved a file as a .htm or .html, TextEdit now renders the file as a browser does rather than showing you the code you have written. Therefore, in order to get TextEdit to work as code editor, there are a few things you need to change in the preferences before you begin using it.
- Open TextEdit
- Go to TextEdit>Preferences
- Under the “New Document” tab, select “Plain Text” as the Format
- Under the “Open and Save” tab, make sure the boxes for “Ignore rich text commands in HTML files” and “Ignore rich text commands in RTF files” are both selected (checked).
- X out of Preferences
You are now ready to open your first document and begin working with code.
To save your file as a .htm or .html file:
- Choose File>Save
- Name the file and add the .htm or .html extension in the “Save As” box
- TextEdit will show you a message indicating that the standard extension for a file is .txt
- Choose “Use .htm (or .html)”
Your file is now saved as an HTML document
